I just started trapping with my ranger so I am no expert in tactics. But basically you lay a trap where you think the enemy may walk over. Otherwise it is a waste. The best to do is to sneak up where an enemy is waiting, and lay the trap far enough away so that you don't get the enemies attention, but as close as possible to them. After you lay the trap, you lure them (shoot at them and then run back). They will run after you and then over the trap.

Traps are great if you have a narrow passage where you know the enemy has to run over. Like doorways for example.

But I have also a question to anyone else? How long does your trap stay active? And can you have two active traps at the same time?

traps are generally not very useful in pve when you have a balanced party, unless of course you get the cooperation of your party members to fall back and let the mobs step on the trap. often times, there's always a warrior that is standing an inch after your traps tanking the mobs, making your traps goto waste.

it is more useful in some cases like underworld trapper group where you have majority of players play trapper and stack traps on a spot, then lure the mobs into it. to speed up trapping recharge, use quickening zephir & serpent's quickness, reduce mana use energising wind. and yeah you can stack more than 2 traps of the same type. more like 4 or 5 times if you have the spirit and stance up.

another place where trapper is useful is when defending thunderhead keep. having a trapper trapping one entrance while you team is fighting off mobs on the other can be a life saver. the crippled jades will take a longer time to reach the king, give you enough time to kill them.

It is not that the trapping is useless here, it is the fact that the team does not communicate and work together. Happens far too often in this game! If a warrior in the group does not have the teamplay or patience to let a trapping ranger do his thing, then the warrior is the wrong warrior for the group.

I would definitely agree that trapping would be a great help for thunderhead keep mission. But after many attempts and finally doing it successfully with my Elem (4 people, 4 henchies) and Mesmer (henchies only), I am totally convinced that the best way to beat this mission is to stay up near the king, and not to guard the doors. Trapping would still be a great plus here - you have plenty of time to trap the stairways when you notice foes approaching.

A risky way to use traps, but one guaranteed to set them off is to use stance like whirling defense or dodge to get close to the enemy and set the trap directly under their nose. there is still a chance that you'll get interrupted but your defensive skill should give you a fair chance of using the trap before that happens..
